Job Specification…

Coach – Hockey is responsible for planning, implementation and maintenance of a professional coaching format for the club through professional coaching and link with other teams. (Performance planning: KPI’s TBC three times per annum: Feb/Jun/Sept)


  • Coordinate and oversee Hockey technical staff and Hockey programs for the UJ Hockey Club.
  • Decision making and team selection for the High Performance team including team preparation for Varsity Hockey and USSA tournaments to meet UJ Sport targets.
  • Planning and execute technical strategies for the UJ Hockey Club.
  • Teach and train student athletes on the rules and fundamentals of Hockey by running practice sessions and drills to prepare for games.
  • Communicate all arrangements with the Hockey Manager and the athlete support team to ensure that logistics are in place for participants according to the expectations of the University and UJ Sport.
  • Represent UJ Hockey at technical meetings of committees and or associations for the sport both internally and externally and where applicable.
  • Actively oversee the day to day training schedule of Hockey.
  • Recruit and retain athletes. Liaise with recruits and tracking of application process.
  • Communicate effectively with a number of key people including team members, the team sport scientist, officials, administrators, parents/guardians, other coaches and the media.
  • Responsible for facilitating and ensuring good communication of all information disseminated by the Hockey Club to players.
  • Ensure clear and timely communication of news worthy information to the media sport news and events in consultation with line manager through the Media Coordinator.
  • Maintain discipline within the club in conjunction with the other coaches and captain. Ensure that players conduct themselves in a manner befitting representatives of the UJ Hockey Club.
  • Identify and report risks within the environment to the assessment register through line manager.
  • Attendance to development workshops, courses and interventions as per agreed performance development Plan (PDP).

Minimum Requirements…

  • SAHA Level II Coaching Certificate
  • Two (2) to three (3) years related working experience preferably in High Performance team at Provincial Level and higher.
  • Up to date knowledge of health and safety and sports related safety measures.
  • Be knowledgeable and have proven skills in the field of High Performance.
  • Be competent in basic financial managment and reporting
  • First aid qualification would be sufficient. Level II would be preferable.
  • A valid driver’s licence

  • Effective leadership and people management.


  • Experience in University Sport
  • Conversant with Microsoft office packages
  • The ability to perform under pressure;
  • Excellent writing, verbal and electronic communication skills;
  • Good Presentation Skills
